One of the best day trips from Lima!
Paracas
A boutique little coastal town in southern Peru. It is most known for the Paracas Natural Reserve and is the gateway to the Ballestas Islands. The Ballestas Islands, also known as Peru’s Galapagos, is home to a variety of seabirds and sea lions. Spend a day out on the water birdwatching or trying some of the freshest ceviche (Peru’s national dish) along the coast. This area is rich in natural beauty and archaeological significance.
Huacachina
A picturesque desert oasis located near the city of Ica in southwestern Peru. Famous for its small natural lagoon surrounded by towering sand dunes, creating a tranquil and scenic setting. This is a popular destination for adventure seekers and those looking to experience the serenity of the Peruvian Desert. Often times there are more tourists than locals in the area. Visitors can partake in activities like dune buggying and sandboarding down the massive dunes. It is also a great place to catch the sunset.
- The dune buggy ride was great. The drivers definitely don’t take it easy when going up and down and around turns. Unfortunately, tourists are not allowed to drive the dune buggies due to safety reasons.
- Sandboarding was even more fun. They show you how to safely sandboard down the dunes. If you are experienced you can rent an actual sandboard where you stand up, hopefully, the whole way down!
- Terry tried to stand up on the provided sandboards on one of the smaller dunes and it did not go well. I regret not getting footage of that incident.

Our experience sandboarding was the highlight of this daytrip!
Things to note about the trip:
- The travel times between cities are long…bring things to entertain yourself while on the bus.
- Internet is not always reliable
- Both destinations are sunny so pack accordingly:
- Sunscreen, sun hat, sun glasses and water
- Sand goes everywhere…secure water shoes/sandals are great for both locations
