About Terry and Kara
Hi! We’re Terry and Kara! We’re gluten-free adventure seekers who have been traveling the world together. Traveling gluten-free can be challenging and we are here to help you navigate that world.
We are both full-time professionals looking to explore the world. As much as we would love to travel for months at a time, we aren’t in a position to give up our careers and aspects of life to go with that. So, we must balance our desire to see the world with the limitations of our careers. With that, we match our schedules and maximize our PTO days. Believe me there is not a day of PTO that we don’t use in a year.
We have been to some unique destinations that initially I wouldn’t have dreamed possible of going to. We look for adventure anywhere, so whether it is underwater or up in the clouds we are up for it. Nature is our best friend and we love to be outside exploring it. With so many different landscapes and places to go, how do we decide on a place?
Enter Kara
I am the researcher and planner of the vacations. I am the one who comes up with the places we are going to travel to. I hadn’t traveled much of the world until the last semester of my schooling where I spent a month studying in Oman. Coming back home and starting a new career was exhilarating but something was always missing.
Then I met Terry
Terry is the adventure seeker continuously pushing me outside my comfort zone. Whether it is doing a specific activity on vacation or creating a blog, Terry is the encourager. He also likes challenges or creating a challenge. The biggest one he has overcome was the diagnosis of Coeliac’s.
He was diagnosed with Coeliac’s disease over 20 years ago and has had to make many adaptations to his diet. This was not an easy feat for him. He really enjoys desserts and bread and does not appreciate vegetables or fruits. I don’t know if I can even imagine what that would be like 20 years ago. The advancements in the gluten free diet have come a long way but there are still significant challenges. One of those challenges was traveling. I mean who wants to go somewhere when you can’t guarantee a meal that is safe to eat?!
It gets Easier…
Finally, within the last couple of years, traveling has become significantly easier. With knowledge and awareness of the diet improving it is a lot simpler to communicate what gluten is. Plus, Google translate has made life much less painful when traveling to another country. They even have dehydrated gluten free meals that are lightweight and easy to pack in case you are in a situation where you aren’t sure what your options will be OR you’re camping/hiking. To be honest, the more remote and off the beaten path we go the better the meals seem to get. Between climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, hiking the Inca Trail and riding reindeer to remote areas of Mongolia where resources are extremely limited, we have had some of the best meals.
We know firsthand the hours of research it takes to plan a vacation. It can be very tiresome to navigate finding gluten free options, but we also know a gluten reaction can ruin a vacation.
