Our top list of things to do while in Seward
Explore Downtown
Seward is a walkable small port city on the Kenai Peninsula. Grab a cup of coffee and stroll through this quant little town. Admire the colorful buildings and the different yachts parked out at the harbor. The jaw-dropping landscape is hard to beat from this area.
The Alaska Sea Life Center
Go and learn about the local sea life seen in Alaska. They even offer up-close encounters for those who want a more intimate experience. https://www.alaskasealife.org/tickets
Kenai Fjords National Park and Exit glacier
The Exit glacier area is the only area accessible by cars. You arrive at the visitor center and can take numerous short hikes out. You can witness the changes the glacier makes on the landscape as well as the recession the glacier has made over the years.
If you want a more strenuous hike, you can hike to the Harding Icefield on top of Exit glacier. It is roughly an 8-mile hike so make sure you are prepared with appropriate hiking shoes and enough water for an elevation climb.
Charter a fishing boat
ProFish-n-Sea provided us an abbreviated tour due to bad weather when other charters did not go out due to high seas. Our Captain was great and we were able to catch some fish before weather worsened. Everyone had fun despite the vomiting!
Bear Creek Weir
Depending on the time of year, go watch the sockeye salmon attempt to swim back up Bear Creek to spawn. There are thousands of these salmon trying to swim their way back up a dam with the help of a ladder. It is quite the endeavor they have to go through and watching them take their turn in line was an interesting site. Plus, it is free!
Go sea kayaking
There are numerous companies and options to go sea kayaking in Seward. We used Miller’s Landing and did their half day adventure. It was a blast. It was a low key relaxing experience. We did get to see a curious sea lion peeking its head out of the water… not as cool as the humpback whale the group the day before got to see swim right by them. Nature is always full of surprises.
