Our off the Beaten Path Wedding Travel Tidbits:
This was the actual reason we went to Alaska when we did. Our original plan was to go to Banff and get married along the shores of Moraine Lake; however, this was at the end of the COVID pandemic and Canada had not opened their borders to travelers. With 3 months to go, we made the decision to switch our destination to Alaska. Of course, we made sure our families were willing to make the flight as some of them were coming from Florida. Lucky for us everything went off without a hitch. Delta airlines did their best to challenge everything but we persevered through flight complications.
For me the most important thing outside of having our families there was the ability to capture the moment. Photography was the only professional hiring we did for our wedding. We used Chugach Peaks Photography and were very pleased with the service and quality of pictures they took. We had exchanged a couple of emails discussing what we were looking for and recommendations as to where we should host our wedding. It was a site unseen location until the day before when my mom and I took a drive there to make sure we knew where we were going.
Everything else just fell into place. Our friend officiated the wedding, my wedding dress easily rolled into a suitcase and back out with minimal wrinkles, my bouquet was dried flowers and easily fit into a carry-on, my niece did my hair, and I preferred no make-up. The weather couldn’t have been better and the mosquitos held off until we were almost done taking pictures. My dad was even able to walk me down “the aisle!” It was a narrow path where we were brushed by moist branches; the memory couldn’t have been any better. After the ceremony, while my husband and I were off taking pictures, our families were able to enjoy a quick meal and warm coffee cozied up next to a fireplace in a nearby restaurant/gift shop.
To celebrate the day we traveled down to Cooper’s Landing to do a scenic float down the Kenai River. Pretty sure we were the first wedding party to float down the river in our wedding attire!
After our unique post-wedding float, we enjoyed a nice meal at Rod & Reel. The food was great with a huge advantage being that everyone could order what they desired. Plus, they were willing to accommodate a large party without adding on a bunch of extra costs (i.e. having to reserve the whole room or have a 3-course meal). It was a little drive back to our hotel, Aleyska Resort, but the events of the day were a success!
